Organic Chemistry Quiz: Part 4
An interactive quiz on Basic IUPAC Nomenclature.
Fundamental Concepts Review
IUPAC Naming Strategy: The core strategy is: 1. Find the Parent Chain: Identify the longest continuous carbon chain containing the principal functional group. This gives the base name. 2. Number the Chain: Number the carbons to give the principal functional group the lowest possible number. Then, give substituents the lowest numbers. 3. Name the Compound: Assemble the name as (substituents)-(parent name)-(suffix).
Key Suffixes: The functional group determines the suffix of the name. Alkanes end in -ane. Alcohols end in -ol. Aldehydes end in -al. Ketones end in -one. Carboxylic acids end in -oic acid.
