English TOLC-S
The Ultimate Guide

Aiming for a degree in Pure Mathematics, Physics, Biological Sciences, or cutting-edge AI programs in Italy? The English TOLC-S (Scienze) is the gatekeeper. Prepare to decode the system. 🧬🔭

110 Minutes
50 Questions
100% in English

Ciao! 👋 If you want to study pure sciences, computer science, or mathematics in Italy, the English TOLC-S (Test On Line CISIA - Scienze) is your absolute starting point. Similar to the TOLC-I, it places a heavy burden on your mathematical and logical processing speed. Let's break down the exact algorithm needed to guarantee your admission into Italy's top scientific faculties. 🇮🇹

Who is this Boss Fight for?

The English TOLC-S is the standard admission requirement for Italy's top-ranked pure science, mathematics, and specific tech universities. If your goal is to study any of the following bachelor's degrees taught entirely in English, this test is your top priority.

Math & Physics

Pure Mathematics, Applied Physics, and Astrophysics programs at historic universities like Padua or Sapienza.

Biological Sciences

Genomics, Marine Biology, Molecular Biology, and Environmental Sciences.

AI & Computer Science

Many specific AI, Data Science, and Computer Science tracks use the TOLC-S interchangeably with the TOLC-I.

The 4 Levels (Structure & Ultimate Syllabus)

You have exactly 110 minutes to clear 50 questions.

THE GOLDEN RULE 🔥

Time is strictly divided by section. If the 50 minutes for Basic Mathematics are over, the portal instantly locks the Math section. You cannot go back. You must manage time perfectly within each individual level.

LVL 1 Basic Mathematics

20 Qs • 50 Min

The Core Engine. This is the most heavily weighted section. Do not be fooled by the word "Basic." Without a calculator, processing 20 complex algebraic and trigonometric problems requires extreme mental agility.

Algebra & Equations: Polynomials, inequalities, absolute values, systems of equations, fractional equations.
Functions & Logs: Exponential and logarithmic properties, graphing, limits concepts.
Geometry & Trig: Analytic geometry (lines, parabolas, circles), Sine/Cosine rules, basic trigonometric identities.
Stats & Combinatorics: Probabilities, permutations, data sets, mean/median/mode.

LVL 2 Reasoning

10 Qs • 20 Min

The Brain Teaser. Evaluates pure deductive reasoning and problem-solving. This section acts as a filter to weed out students who simply memorized formulas but lack critical thinking. You have exactly 2 minutes per question.

Propositional Logic: Syllogisms, truth tables, negations, IF-THEN deductions, identifying logical fallacies.
Set Theory: Necessary vs. sufficient conditions, Venn diagrams.
Mathematical Modeling: Extracting data from confusing text and translating word problems into algebraic equations rapidly.

LVL 3 Reading Comp.

10 Qs • 20 Min

The Speed Reader. You will be given dense scientific, abstract, or technical texts and must answer questions based strictly on the provided text.

Skills Required: Extracting key data points, identifying the author's primary intent, synthesizing complex technical vocabulary, and avoiding "distractor" answers that contain outside knowledge not mentioned in the text.

LVL 4 Basic Sciences

10 Qs • 20 Min

The Broad Spectrum. Unlike the TOLC-I which focuses purely on Physics and Chemistry, the TOLC-S includes a broader mix of the natural sciences. You must be prepared for a wider variety of introductory scientific concepts.

Physics: Kinematics, Dynamics, basic Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Optics.
Chemistry: Atomic structure, stoichiometry, ideal gases, basic reactions, pH.
Earth & Life Sciences: Basic geological principles, cell biology basics (depending on the specific university's variant, though usually strictly Physical/Chemical).

The Scoring System

The English TOLC-S uses a standardized point system. Because it is highly competitive, simply attempting every question is a dangerous strategy. You must understand the penalty system.

+1.00

Correct Answer

0.00

No Answer (Blank)

-0.25

Wrong Answer

STRATEGY: Do not randomly guess! A -0.25 penalty can destroy your ranking. If you cannot confidently eliminate at least 3 out of the 5 options, it is mathematically better to leave the question blank (0.00).

Where to take it? The @HOME Setup

Most international students will take the TOLC @HOME version. CISIA uses draconian anti-cheat measures. If you break a single rule, the proctor will terminate your exam instantly without a refund.

1. SEB Browser

You must install the Safe Exam Browser on your main laptop. It strictly locks out all other programs, preventing any cheating or tab switching.

2. Dual Camera

You must join a Zoom call on your smartphone and place it behind you at exactly a 45° angle. The human proctor must see your screen and your hands at all times.

3. Sterile Room

Completely clear desk. NO headphones, NO smartwatches, NO other people entering the room. Only blank scratch paper and a pen are permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Everything you need to know about the English TOLC-S and how it differs from other Italian entrance exams.

What is the difference between TOLC-S and TOLC-I?
The TOLC-I (Engineering) has 50 questions with a strong focus on Logic and Physics. The TOLC-S (Sciences) also has 50 questions but replaces the pure Logic section with "Reasoning and Problems" and expands the "Sciences" section to include a broader mix of Physics, Chemistry, and sometimes Earth Sciences, depending on the university's specific requirements.
Can I use the TOLC-S instead of the CEnT-S?
Starting in late 2025/2026, many Italian universities are transitioning to the unified CEnT-S exam. However, several specific pure science faculties still require or accept the traditional English TOLC-S. You must ALWAYS verify the specific "Call for Admission" (Bando di Ammissione) of your target university for the current academic year.
Does passing TOLC-S prove my English proficiency?
NO. The English TOLC-S does NOT test English grammar or general reading comprehension. It only tests science and math in the English language. Therefore, you will still need a valid language certificate (such as IELTS 5.5/6.0, TOEFL, or Cambridge) to officially enroll in the university.
How many times can I take the exam?
You can generally take the CISIA TOLC exams once per calendar month. Universities will typically evaluate your application using the highest official score you achieved across all your valid attempts before the application deadline.
