Ciao! 👋 Italy is globally famous for offering incredibly accessible higher education. Unlike the US or UK where medical and engineering degrees can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, Italy actively subsidizes both EU and Non-EU international students. If you know how to navigate the system, you can secure full tuition waivers, free dorms, and thousands of euros in cash stipends. Let's explore your options beyond just the ISEE.
1. The DSU Scholarship (Regional Aid)
The Diritto allo Studio Universitario (DSU) is the holy grail of Italian financial aid. It translates to the "Right to University Study." The Italian government believes that no capable student should be denied education due to a lack of money. This scholarship is managed by individual regions, not the universities themselves.
What do you actually get?
- Cash Grant (Borsa di Studio)Depending on your financial bracket and whether you are a commuter or "away-from-home" student, you receive between €3,000 and €8,000 directly into your bank account per year.
- Full Tuition WaiverIf you win the DSU, you are exempt from paying university tuition fees entirely (you only pay the ~€156 regional tax).
- Free Accommodation & MealsAccess to free or heavily subsidized regional student dormitories, plus 1 or 2 free meals a day at the university canteen (Mensa).
The Requirements & The "Revoca" Pitfall
To get the DSU in your first year, it is purely based on your family's income (You need an ISEE Parificato below ~€25,000).
However, to KEEP the scholarship and get it in your second year, it switches to a Merit-Based system!
The CFU Requirement
You must achieve a minimum number of university credits (CFU) by August 10th of your first year (usually around 20-25 CFU). If you fail to pass your exams and miss this target, you trigger a REVOCA (Revocation).
You will be forced to pay back all the cash they gave you AND pay the back-tuition for the year!
2. Elite Merit-Based Scholarships
Unibo Action 1 & 2
UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNAOne of the most famous and lucrative merit grants in Italy. Action 1 grants a full tuition waiver, while Action 2 provides a massive cash grant of €11,000 per year. Awarded based entirely on SAT or TOLC scores.
