Why Should IMAT Students Care?
Many international students ask: "Why do I care about an exam meant for Italian-taught medical programs?" The answer is simple: It is created by the exact same people. Analyzing the November 2025 Filter Semester Exam provides unprecedented insight into the Ministry's current thinking, question-writing tendencies, and priority topics. Consider this your strategic roadmap for IMAT 2026.
The Groundbreaking Exam Structure
After completing the mandatory preparation courses designed by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), Italian candidates sat for this official assessment. The exam evaluated the three core sciences, each containing exactly 31 questions. However, the format was completely different from anything seen before in Italy.
15
Multiple-Choice (MCQ)
Single-answer multiple-choice questions with 5 options. This is the classic IMAT style you are used to. It tests your ability to eliminate wrong answers and find the most logical conclusion.
16
Fill-in-the-Blank
A terrifying new format. No options to choose from. You must physically write or type the correct term, number, or molecule. This tests pure, unadulterated recall and deep understanding.
Biology Section: The Core Framework
The biology section closely mirrored the difficulty of IMAT 2024 and 2025. It heavily emphasized core concepts, precise definitions, and foundational mechanisms. While most items fell squarely within standard IMAT difficulty, a few questions required a much deeper conceptual understanding.
MCQ Topics
15 Questions- 3 Genetic molecules (DNA/RNA)
- 2 Protein structures
- 1 Organelles
- 1 Cardiovascular system
- 1 Cell division
- 1 Cell membrane
- 2 Transcription & Translation
- 1 Endocrine system
- 1 Tissues
- 2 Bacteria & Viruses
Fill-in-the-Blank
16 Questions- 3 Genetics (Mendelian/Population)
- 3 Proteins (Enzymes/Folding)
- 2 DNA replication mechanisms
- 1 Genetic molecules
- 1 Tissues
- 1 Cell signaling
- 1 Cell division
- 1 Apoptosis
- 1 Cardiovascular (blood components)
BIOLOGY STRATEGY ALERT
Questions on protein structure and cell-signaling pathways (like G-protein coupled receptors or apoptosis triggers) were notably advanced. Students must strengthen their knowledge in these specific areas, as they often determine performance on the most challenging, rank-deciding IMAT items.
Chemistry Section: The Broad Sweep
Surprisingly, the Chemistry section was easier than the typical IMAT, especially compared with the brutal calculations seen in recent IMAT sessions. It lacked true problem-solving or complex stoichiometry. Instead, it focused entirely on definitions, fundamental principles, and straightforward applications across a very broad range of topics.
MCQ Topics
15 Questions- 3 Organic molecules (Functional groups)
- 3 Gen. chemistry fundamentals
- 2 Atomic structure & Isotopes
- 2 Acids and bases (pH theory)
- 1 Basic concept definitions
- 1 Equation balancing
- 1 General thermodynamics
- 1 Solutions & Mixtures
- 1 Chemical bonding (VSEPR)
Fill-in-the-Blank
16 Questions- 4 Organic molecules (Naming/Isomers)
- 3 Organic chemistry reactions
- 2 Bonding characteristics
- 2 Solutions (Concentration theory)
- 2 Acids and bases (Bronsted-Lowry)
- 1 Gas laws (Boyle/Charles)
- 1 Oxidation reaction (Redox)
- 1 Chemical equilibrium (Le Chatelier)
CHEMISTRY STRATEGY ALERT
Because it is broader but less mathematically intense, this paper is absolutely perfect for students who need to build their conceptual framework. Notice the massive emphasis on Organic Chemistry (10 total questions!). You must master functional groups, IUPAC naming, and basic reactions.
Physics: The Final Boss Fight
This was the hardest section by far. The Ministry threw a massive curveball by covering a vast range of classical physics, including areas not commonly tested in IMAT. It rewarded genuine physics thinking, multi-step problem solving, and dimensional analysis over simple formula recall.
Topic Classification
Fluid Mechanics
Viscosity (Poiseuille’s Law), Archimedes’ Principle, Bernoulli’s Equation.
Electricity & Mag.
Power & Current, Capacitance, Charge in Magnetic Field, Ohm’s Law.
Units & Dimensions
Multiple Unit Conversions, Dimensions of Force, Pressure units (atm, Pa).
WARNING: FLUID MECHANICS
Both the IMAT and this Filter Exam treat Fluid Mechanics as a highly testable topic. Do NOT ignore fluids just because your British textbooks do!
Your 2026 Master Strategy
Cover Everything
Do not leave out any topic just because it was rare in the past. The pool is expanding.
Understand, Don't Memorize
Deep conceptual understanding is required now. Simple substitution is not enough.
Practice Multi-Step
Practice questions that combine different principles into one problem.
