Ciao! 👋 Welcome to the most important administrative guide you will read this year. Every single cycle, the Meditaliano Team witnesses brilliant international students lose their opportunity to study at the University of Messina. Why? Not because their IMAT score was low, but because they completely misunderstood the Pre-Evaluation process. Let's fix that right now.
What Actually is Pre-Evaluation?
Let's shatter the biggest myth immediately: Pre-evaluation is NOT university admission. It does not guarantee you a seat in the medical program. Instead, it is a strict, mandatory administrative background check conducted by the university before you are even allowed to sit for the IMAT exam.
The university reviews your high school qualifications to ensure they are valid for Italian higher education and meet strict national prerequisites.
If approved, UniME issues an official 'Admission Letter'. Think of this as a VIP pass—it unlocks your ability to apply for a student Visa and officially register for the IMAT.
You STILL have to take and crush the IMAT. The pre-evaluation letter just puts you on the starting line. Your final IMAT score determines if you get in.
For 2026/27, the application fee is €30. It is non-refundable, but it allows you to submit up to two different programme applications at UniME.
The Two-Platform Trap: Eval vs. Enroll
Pay close attention, because this is where 80% of administrative failures occur. Applying to medical schools in Italy is not a single-step process. You are dealing with two separate entities: The specific University (Messina) and the Italian Ministry (National Government).
⚠️ If you submit your documents on only ONE of these platforms, your application is considered invalid, and you will not be allowed to take the exam. You must complete BOTH.
UniME Application Portal
📍 Managed by: University of Messina
🎯 Purpose: Academic background verification. The university checks if your high school transcripts are up to standard.
💰 Cost: €30 Application Fee.
✅ Outcome: You receive an official "Admission Letter" stating you are academically eligible.
Universitaly Portal
📍 Managed by: Italian Ministry (MUR)
🎯 Purpose: Official national registration. This platform links your university application directly to the Italian diplomatic authorities (Embassy) in your country.
💰 Cost: Generally Free.
✅ Outcome: Initiates your Student Visa process (crucial for Non-EU candidates).
The 2026 Application Timeline
Timing is everything. For the 2026/2027 academic year, the University of Messina expects to open the Medicine pre-evaluation during their "5th Call". You must be ready, as the system does not allow document uploads after you click submit.
Submit to UniME Portal
The window opens. You must upload all your translated, legalized documents to the Messina portal and pay the €30 fee. Prepare these documents months in advance to avoid last-minute panic.
Admission Letter & Universitaly
If your documents pass the check, Messina issues your Admission Letter. Immediately take this letter and complete your Pre-Enrollment on the national Universitaly portal.
Visa Processing & IMAT Registration
Universitaly validates your request and sends it to your local Italian Embassy. You begin your Student Visa application. Simultaneously, you register and pay for the actual IMAT exam.
The Boss Fight: IMAT Exam Day
You sit for the International Medical Admission Test. This is the deciding factor. Your ranking on the national list will determine if you secure one of Messina's highly coveted seats.
The Master Document Checklist
Do not upload blurry photos taken from your phone. Scan everything properly. Also, remember that documents usually need to be translated into Italian or English and legally verified (via Apostille or Italian Embassy legalisation / Declaration of Value).
- 1. Valid Passport
Ensure your passport does not expire within the next 12 months. The scan must clearly show your photo, details, and MRZ code at the bottom.
- 2. High School Diploma (12 Years)
Your final graduation certificate. Crucial Note: If you are still in your final year and haven't graduated yet, you can upload a provisional certificate from your school confirming your expected graduation date!
- 3. Official Transcript of Records
The official document showing all your grades from the final years of your secondary education.
- 4. University Entrance Exam Certificate
This is ONLY required if your home country mandates an exam to enter a national university (e.g., YKS in Turkey, Selectividad in Spain, GaoKao in China, Vestibular in Brazil).
The 12-Year Rule
Italy strictly dictates that you must have completed exactly 12 years of formal schooling. If your country's education system only takes 11 years (e.g., parts of the UK, Russia, some South American nations), your application will be instantly rejected.
How to fix an 11-year gap:
- 1Provide proof of completing at least 1 full year of University studies in your home country.
- 2Provide a certificate completing an official Italian Foundation Year programme.
No IELTS or TOEFL Required!
Great news for international students! For the English-taught Medicine and Surgery programme at Messina, an international English language certificate is NOT mandatory.
Why? Because the IMAT exam is conducted entirely in English. Sitting and passing the exam itself serves as legal proof of your English proficiency to the Italian government.
Instant Rejection Pitfalls
Do not let all your hard IMAT studying go to waste because of a preventable paperwork error. Be extremely careful to avoid these four common application killers:
Incomplete Uploads
The UniME system is rigid. It does not allow you to go back and append files once submitted. If a document is blurry, or missing a page, you get rejected.
Missing the Deadline
Italian universities are famously rigid with administrative deadlines. July 20th means July 20th. Missing it by one hour means waiting until next year.
The 11-Year Trap
Applying without the required extra University transcript or Foundation year certificate if your country only has 11 years of high school.
Skipping Universitaly
Getting the Admission Letter from UniME and celebrating too early, completely forgetting to do the actual national Pre-Enrollment on the Universitaly portal.
